Virginia Feature: Oatmeal Fig Squares

Bring on the Holidays! Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner. So it’s time to start planning your Holiday menu. Peppermint, gingerbread, chestnuts, and figs are just a few of the flavors that make the season bright. The scent and the taste of these Holiday delights bring back great memories of family gatherings from Holidays past. In my family, there were always candy canes on the mantle and plates of gingerbread cookies at the dessert table. The figs, however, were typically just used for decoration. They add a beautiful accent to any cheese tray or wreath, but they make an even better dessert!

Oatmeal Fig Squares are a sweet (and salty) way to add a modern twist to your Holiday menu. They are delicious little squares, loaded with lots of festive, “figgy” flavor. They can be eaten on the go, freeing up the other hand to wrangle your toddler. Or, they can be placed on a fancy plate with chantilly crème and a glass of sweet wine.

Best of all, Oatmeal Fig Squares are easy and fun to make with your little helper. My little one loved pressing down the oatmeal crust, and spreading the fig jam with her spatula. What a fun and tasty activity to do on a chilly winter day.

In preparation for the Holiday season this year, celebrate the frosty temps and twinkling lights with Oatmeal Fig Squares. Joyeuses fêtes and bon appétit!
